Study or work abroad
Most undergraduate courses recognise and support opportunities to study or work abroad through the UK Government's Turing Scheme

Study or work abroad
Why study or work abroad?
With Ji8¸£ÀûÍø, you could spend part of your degree studying or working in a different country. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore a different way of life. Plus, it demonstrates flexibility and the ability to take on a challenge – both skills that are highly valued by employers.
The decision to study or work abroad can be life changing. You'll get to travel, make new friends, learn a new language, improve your self-confidence and significantly improve your employability.
Fewer than 8% of UK students currently study abroad as part of their degree, so this kind of experience will put you among an elite group of enterprising students.
How much does it cost?
The great news is: you benefit from a tuition fee reduction and a bursary or grant, and if you are working abroad you receive this grant in addition to your salary. The programme is designed to be accessible and affordable:
- Kingston students never pay tuition fees to the host university
- students who go abroad for a full year get a significant tuition fee reduction
- all students going abroad receive a Turing Grant to assist with costs. There is also a means-tested travel grant available
- many of our destinations have a lower cost of living than Kingston

Where can I study abroad?
As part of the Turing Scheme, students can apply to study abroad at any of our partner universities as long as they have been approved for their subject areas. We have partners in over 30 countries, spanning five continents.
An exchange year can be a chance to learn a new language or improve your current language skills. However, you don't always need a second language to study abroad as many courses are taught in English. You can choose to study abroad for a full academic year or just for a semester.

Work placements
Work placements provide you with the chance to gain valuable practical experience and prepare for the world of work. Placements often take place in your third year. You will then return to Ji8¸£ÀûÍø for your final (fourth) year.
There are many potential benefits to work placements during a degree:
- Professional placements are paid and allow the student to put their skills and knowledge into practice in a 'live' environment.
- Work experience can also provide good ideas on which to base a final year project. Evidence has shown that placement students often achieve a higher class degree.
- Placements also boost career opportunities, as employers are looking for experience on CVs.
- Placement students tend to secure a graduate job more quickly and earn a higher starting salary than those who don't do a placement. In fact, a number of our placement students are offered a graduate job by their placement employer.
- A placement is also a rewarding experience and an enjoyable break from studying, allowing students to earn some money and to come back into their final year with a fresh and enthusiastic outlook.
Each faculty has a specialised placement team which will guide you through the application process. Placement and careers fairs can also provide the opportunity to meet employers on campus.
If you are interested in a work placement, you need to consider this early. You’ll want to apply in plenty of time. We encourage our students to look at work placement opportunities around the world, not just in the UK.
Where can I go to work abroad?
If you secure a work placement anywhere outside the UK, and it is recognised by your faculty, you could be eligible to receive a Turing Grant. This is awarded in addition to any salary offered by your employer.
Depending on your course, and faculty approval, your overseas work placement may be incorporated into an international study exchange year. Or, it may simply be a stand-alone work placement during a summer break or your third year.
Do it, because you will have the best time of your life! It is a unique experience and this is the only time you can do it.
Definitely apply, because if you get the chance to do it, you will have the time of your life!
By deciding to study abroad you will be embarking on an adventure that will change your life. Experience study abroad for yourself and have the best time of your life!
