How to host a successful internship
Like the sound of hosting a Ji8¸£ÀûÍø intern at your organisation? Here are our top tips for a successful internship.
- Set goals from day one to make sure you get the results you need
- Establish expectations and day-to-day objectives regularly
- Create challenges to benefit both you and the intern
- Plan an induction to show your intern around and identify any training needs
- Find a mentor to train the intern, set boundaries and communicate clearly
Who can recruit interns from Kingston Business School?
Thinking about hosting an intern? You should be able to:
- Provide an internship for 30–40 hours a week, for a minimum of of 10 weeks
- Offer a role relevant to the student’s degree
- Offer the National Minimum or London Living Wage, and pay students through PAYE
- Have public liability and employers’ liability insurance in line with UK industry standards
- Provide feedback to the University on students’ performance
How the recruitment process works
- Find an intern
Create a job advert and send it to our Placements Team to upload. Students can apply directly to you, or we can create a shortlist for you. You will always have the final say on who you take on. - Complete the documents
Fill out the required health and safety and Host Agreement forms. - The internship
Your intern will gain valuable experience, understand your expectations and develop key skills. You’ll also be helping the community by shaping student perceptions.

- April: confirm offers
- May: successful student starts work experience with you
Our Business Readiness Programme
Not sure whether your student will be ready to take on an internship? Our Business Readiness Programme offers a range of skills and training to prepare interns for the workplace.
Students must attend and pass assessments on the Business Readiness Programme before starting an internship. As an employer, you should follow your own recruitment process too.
