Equas Ltd case study
Ji8¸£ÀûÍø and Equas Ltd partnership to deliver global compliance solutions

Partnership overview
Navigating UAE compliance for business growth
Equas identified a gap in the UAE market. UK companies lacked access to clear legal and compliance resources when expanding abroad. The company aimed to develop an environmental, health and safety legal compliance tool tailored for UAE businesses. This required local expertise to accurately identify and classify diverse legal standards and develop a user-friendly database.
Equas Ltd, a leading UK-based consultancy and software provider, helps businesses achieve and maintain critical management standards.
With support from Ji8¸£ÀûÍø’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), Equas developed an innovative global compliance solution tailored for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) market.
This positioned Equas as a leader in legal and regulatory consultancy.

The solution
A two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) was launched with Ji8¸£ÀûÍø, led by Professor Umut Turksen from the School of Law. The project was supported by a graduate associate, Owen Roberts-Thomas, who managed day-to-day operations alongside Equas and Professor Turksen.
The KTP project provided Equas with insights and resources to develop a comprehensive compliance database for the UAE. The new system offered a searchable platform to help businesses identify UAE-specific legal requirements, track compliance and support operations in unfamiliar legal contexts.
The outcome
Transforming Equas’ business and expanding global reach
The successful project led to significant advancements for Equas Ltd, earning a high rating from Innovate UK and enabling the following achievements:
- Developing the first UAE-focused environmental and health and safety compliance database.
- Enhancing Equas’ existing compliance manager software, boosting sales in the UK.
- Securing valuable connections in the UAE through field visits, expanding the company’s market reach.
- Attracting interest from global corporations, leading to a broader Equas’ client base.
These developments positioned Equas as a leader in research and development in legal compliance technology.
Ongoing impact and career growth
The KTP also supported Owen Roberts-Thomas in gaining recognised industry qualifications and academic experience through teaching opportunities at Ji8¸£ÀûÍø. Today, Owen is a full-time Legal Team Manager at Equas, contributing to ongoing developments in compliance solutions.
